Sisterhood of Scrap

I am so excited about this weeks spotlight.  I found this blog and felt like I had found my long lost sisters, these ladies “get it”.  They remember why they started this obsession (did I say obsession) I meant hobby.

Please invite other “Scrap Sisters” to stop by and show these ladies some love!

Sisterhood of Scrap is such a great idea, how did it come to be?

My sisters, Carla, Susan and I wanted to start a blog and do something as a team of real-life sisters, so we thought about doing a sister-themed blog.  Coming from a family of 5 girls, we KNEW a lot about what it really meant to be a sister! So, we brainstormed, chatted and spent quite a number of hours on planning what we wanted. This blog was to celebrate the “sisterhood” in scrapbooking and we wanted to highlight some the wonderful ladies out there and we wanted to honor them by giving them the spotlight for a week. We started this a little over a year ago and we are still going strong and absolutely love sharing our creations and the creations of “sisters” all over the world! It’s been amazing.

Who are the creators of Sisterhood of Scrap?

There are three of us, and we are all real sisters. Me (Deanne Burton), Carla Robinson and Susan Coish. I’m the oldest, then it’s Carla and Susan. Carla and I live in Newfoundland and are just a few minutes drive from each other.Susan is in Moncton. I am a mom and wife. We have 2 teen boys. I’m an elementary teacher, and have been for 20 years. Carla and her husband have 4 children.Carla homeschools her children and has been for many years (I think it’s been 10 years now). Susan and her husband have 2 girls and she is studying to be a nurse. She studies hard and is doing so well.We are so proud of her. She has also been published in scrapbooking magazines four times (twice in Canadian Scrapbookers!)

We have another sister, Jane, who scrapbooks. We wanted her to be a part of this blog but with three children and full time nursing job, she just didn’t have the time to dedicate to it. We have one other sister and brother who aren’t into scrapbooking, but are very talented musically!!!

What has been the best part of Sisterhood of Scrap?

I love SISTER SUNDAY! It’s so great to see the ladies in the spotlight each week and sharing with us a little part of their life and creativity. So much talent out there!!!

Tammy Gray- Spotlight Artist

When I first started SOK, I had emails inviting me to new forums, blogs etc.  I was looking for a home where people could be theirselves, be creative, but still maintain some level of class and humanity.  I have found that place, not to mention tons and tons of talent at SIS. My Spotlight artist is a member at SIS and I love her work.  Tammy Gray has a blog and an Etsy Shop (links below), it was a project she is doing with her grandmother that touched me.  How many of us wish we had our grandparent’s life journaled.

Please enjoy Tammy and all of her talent.  Thanks again Tammy!

Do you have a scrapbook room, if so what is the best thing about having your own space?

Yes, this is the first time that I have a dedicated studio. I really enjoy going into my space and being as quiet or loud as I like. I enjoy the escape of being in my own space and not having to pick it all up when I am finished working. I have created stations for stamping, photo taking, picking out embellishments and it sure makes the process a lot easier. Here are photos of my studio:

How long have you been scrapbooking? What keeps you scrapping?

I started scrapbooking two years ago. I love to try new things. There are so many different styles in scrapbooking it gives me a chance to try all sorts of new things.

When you scrapbook do you watch TV. listen to music, or enjoy peace and quiet? If you listen to music what do you like?

I usually have the TV on. I listen to whatever my family has on or one of my favorite shows. However, I seriously love quiet moments in my scrap space.

Do you scrapbook for yourself or do you make gifts for others?

Almost everything I do is for someone else. I am inspired by making sure that others know how much they mean to me.

What project are you the most proud of?

That is a hard one. Maybe it was my first page. Sometimes, it is the starting of a thing that is the hardest.

Is there a technique that you would like to try that you just haven’t tried yet?

I am not sure, usually if I see a new technique and I have the supplies I am all about trying it. I do plan on making some inchies. They are like ATCs but 1”x1”.

Do you get more done when you scrap alone or with other people?

I get more done being alone. I laugh my head off when I go to crops. I still get a lot done but I really have to plan ahead and make page kits to be successful at a crop.

I love the project with your grandmother. Share it with us. What if any answer surprised you the most. What you learned about your grandmother that you didn’t know.

Oh, goodness! When I asked her about a particularly joyful day, I expected her to say the birth of her children or some other family moment. To say it was her start into prison ministry was a shock. As I thought about it, I think that was the moment she “found” herself and the calling that God had for her, so I can see why she said that.

I know my grandmother pretty well. We write emails to each other every day and we have been for at least a decade. However, I am really glad to have her current favorite Bible verses. Some of the ones she listed have been her favorites for years but it is nice to see she has some new ones as well.

What’s your biggest challenge about scrapbooking?

I am a pretty prolific scrapper. That means I run out of photos and paper all of the time! :D

Another Look What I Found Friday

Make sure you visit these ladies and tell them SOK sent ya!

Do You Have Enough  Well do you have enough or are you like me still shopping when you couldn’t use everything you have in a lifetime.  I have few vices so I continue to shop, I use the fact that Carl smokes as my justification I’ll be in trouble if he ever quits..ha.  I love this blog and the idea of using my older stuff.

Page Maps Y’all know I’m all about some cheating when it comes to getting some pages done, I love this site!

Don’t forget Sunday is another highlight!

color and black white pictures…let’s see them

Well, today is the first challenge.  Each week after the spotlighted artist submits their pages I’m going to do a challenged from their pages or interview.  I loved Sherri’s page with the black and white and color picture, this is something I have done in the past and love the look.  Email me your pages or a link to your gallery so we can see yours, if you haven’t done one-what’s stopping ya?  Get busy!

Shane’s senior pics, Madison Blvd. Photography provided me with awesome pics and I loved all of them but the above three really captured the different sides of “my boy”.

Let’s see your pages, email me at carlnmichelle@yahoo.com

It Just Made Sense..

When I started this blog last week I was down right angry.  I remember thinking why can’t I find “cyber friends” like my real life scrappin’ girls.  Why can’t we all just get along?  So when I decided to highlight someone’s work I decided to choose Sherri, my favorite scrappin buddy.  The problem is I don’t even know where to begin with trying to express how I’ve seen Sherri use scrapbooking in a positive light.

My first thought was wait how can I do Sherri she doesn’t have a blog or a gallery online and that’s when it hit me, Sherri scraps for the reasons we all began scrapbooking, she isn’t worried about being published, having her ego stroked or “out doing” another fellow scrapper.

I was surprised when I asked Sherri for pages that she even had any, she is forever making someone a book or gift.  Here are just a few of her pages that I love.

I couldn’t do this blog without thanking Sherri for introducing me to scrapbooking all those years ago at a CM party, we have had some great, funny, long scrapbooking days and nights since then.   Hope you enjoy the interview after her pages.

Love ya girl!

I know you have a new scrapbook room, what is the best thing about having your own space?
I can work whenever  I want and pick up where I left off.  I don’t have to put everything away.  I know where everything is.

How long have you been scrapbooking?  What keeps you scrapping?
10 years.  I think it’s very important to preserve memories for future generations.  My great-aunt just died and she has alot of scrapbooks that tell her story.  I’m very glad she has them.  I think it’s important for us to know where we came from, our heritage.

When you scrapbook do you watch t.v., listen to music, or enjoy peace and quiet?
Music or quiet.

Do you scrapbook for yourself or do you make gifts for others?
Both, but  more for others.  I have recently realized I need to get my own memories journaled before I forget them.  Time is going faster the older I get.

What project are you the most proud of?
The albums I’ve done for my Dad and Mom.

Is there a technique that you would like to try that you just haven’t tried yet?
Maybe a digital program.  It looks so simple.

Your husband lovingly tells us, “Less yappin and more scrappin.”  Do you get more done when you scrap alone or with other people?
For me about the same.  It can take me a while to decide on what to do.  When I’m around others I can get ideas off them.

You have recently discovered Faith Scrapping, have you started any of your own pages?
Sadly no.  It’s something I really want to pursue though.

If you could pick one scripture to scrapbook that sums up your testimony or your walk with God what would it be?
1 Cor. 13  The chapter about love….”love never fails”

It’s Look What I Found Friday..

What A Money Saver  I love how some folks just have the knack of saving themselves a lot of money.  This is such a great idea.  Let me know if you make your own.

A little humor goes a long way with me.  This girl makes you laugh out loud, it’s the spit your drink on your keyboard humor that we all need.

Who doesn’t need a girl weekend?  Makes me want to call the girls for some creative fun!

Thinking green.  Stop by and answer the question about recycled paper.

My first scavenger hunt for happy happy joy joy was easier then I thought!  Thanks to the ladies at SNR for their support and to all of you ladies that have sent me emails, keep them coming.

I am working on Sunday’s Spotlight artist, which has been tricky because she doesn’t even have a gallery or blog..what a concept she scraps just for the sake of scrappin.

I have loved the emails I’ve gotten, remember if something makes you smile, giggle or just feel proud of being a part of the scrapbooking world share it with me at carlnmichelle@yahoo.com.

Change The Changeable

“Change the changeable,

accept the unchangeable,

and remove yourself from the unacceptable.”

Dennis Waitley

Hello Friend!  Welcome to the world of Scraps Of Kindness, it’s a simple place.  We are going to use scrapbooking to celebrate women.  The celebrations will be about life, frienship, heartache, overcoming obstacles, love, weight loss and anything else our little hearts desire.

Here’s the plan each Sunday starting May 11th (Mother’s Day) we will have a spotlight Scrapper.  That person will be picked from nominations from all of you.  Do you have a friend, sister, mother or maybe a cyber friend that you have seen use scrapbooking for some sort of good or kindness.  The sky is the limit-a volunteer project, a memory book made for someone who experienced a loss, a book of Me that encouraged you in your own journey, a forum where people are encouraged to be kind and encouraging to one another..toot someone’s horn!

I have someone picked for May 11th and then after that it’ll be all up to you!  Email me at carlnmichelle@yahoo.com with suggestions.

Each Friday I will post various layouts, projects, blogs etc. that I find that spread a little sunshine.

The blog was named by Thena, thanks Thena!
